AHA vs BHA vs PHA: Which Exfoliant Is Right for Your Skin?

AHA vs BHA vs PHA: Which Exfoliant Is Right for Your Skin?

By GlowCare Pakistan  ·  July 2026  ·  7 min read

If you have been exploring Korean skincare for any length of time, you have encountered the terms AHA, BHA, and PHA. They appear on exfoliating toners, pads, and serums across most of the brands we stock at GlowCare, and choosing between them is one of the most common questions we receive from Pakistani customers. This guide breaks down exactly what each one does, which concerns they address most effectively, how to introduce them safely into a Pakistani skincare routine, and which products at GlowCare deliver the best results for each acid type.

Why Chemical Exfoliation Matters for Pakistani Skin

Skin renews itself through a natural process called desquamation: old, dead skin cells on the surface shed and are replaced by newer cells from below. When this process slows down, which happens with age, UV damage, dehydration, and barrier compromise, dead cells accumulate on the surface. The result is dull, congested, rough-textured skin with reduced ability to absorb the serums and actives in your routine.

For Pakistani skin specifically, this process is further complicated by high UV exposure that damages surface cells faster, and the lingering PIH that accumulates in those surface layers. Regular chemical exfoliation removes the dead cell layer, reveals newer and more evenly pigmented skin underneath, and significantly improves the absorption and efficacy of every other product in your routine.

Chemical exfoliants dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells and the surface without physical scrubbing, making them more consistent, less irritating, and more effective than physical scrubs for most Pakistani skin types.

🍊 AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

AHAs are water-soluble acids derived from natural sources: Glycolic Acid from sugar cane, Lactic Acid from milk, Mandelic Acid from bitter almonds. Because they are water-soluble, AHAs work primarily on the skin's surface, dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells and allowing them to shed more evenly.

What AHA does: Exfoliates the skin surface, improves overall skin brightness and tone, reduces the appearance of post-acne marks and superficial hyperpigmentation, refines texture, stimulates collagen production with consistent long-term use, and improves absorption of products applied afterward.

Best skin concerns for Pakistani skin: Surface PIH and post-acne marks, dull and uneven skin tone, rough or bumpy skin texture, fine lines and early aging signs, and overall brightening. Explore our skin brightening collection for complementary products.

The AHA options at GlowCare

Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecular size and deepest penetration, making it the most potent and fastest-acting AHA but also the most likely to cause irritation on sensitive Pakistani skin. Lactic Acid has a larger molecule, works more gently, and is better tolerated on sensitive skin while still delivering meaningful brightening results. Mandelic Acid is the gentlest AHA option with natural antibacterial properties, making it suitable for sensitive and acne-prone Pakistani skin. Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel and The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner are two of the most accessible AHA options available at GlowCare.

How often to use AHA: Start with once per week. Build to 2 to 3 times per week over 4 to 6 weeks as your skin adjusts. Always apply in the evening: AHA increases photosensitivity and must always be followed by SPF50+ the next morning.

🧪 BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)

BHA, most commonly Salicylic Acid, is oil-soluble. This single characteristic is what makes it fundamentally different from AHA and significantly more effective for certain Pakistani skin concerns. Because it dissolves in oil, Salicylic Acid can penetrate through the sebum that fills the pore lining and exfoliate from inside the pore itself, rather than only at the skin surface.

What BHA does: Penetrates the pore and dissolves the sebum plugs and dead skin cells that create blackheads, whiteheads, and congestion. Reduces active acne breakouts by clearing the conditions that allow bacteria to thrive inside pores. Controls excess sebum production over time. Reduces the appearance of enlarged pores. Improves overall skin texture and clarity.

Best skin concerns for Pakistani skin: Oily skin, clogged pores and blackheads, acne-prone skin, congested texture, and breakout-related post-acne marking. Explore our pore care collection and acne treatment collection for complementary products.

The BHA options at GlowCare

The Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid uses 4% Betaine Salicylate, a gentler form of BHA derived from sugar beet that delivers the same pore-clearing benefit as Salicylic Acid with lower irritation risk. The Anua BHA 2% Gentle Exfoliating Toner combines standard Salicylic Acid with Heartleaf extract to neutralize potential irritation. Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is the global reference standard for Salicylic Acid exfoliants. All three are available at GlowCare Pakistan.

How often to use BHA: Gentle BHA formulas like the Anua 2% can be used daily on oily Pakistani skin in Pakistan's humid climate. Standard BHA products like the Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid are best used 3 to 4 times per week. Always follow with moisturizer and SPF the next morning.

🌿 PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid)

PHA is the newest and gentlest of the three chemical exfoliant families. Gluconolactone and Lactobionic Acid are the most common PHAs. Because PHA molecules are significantly larger than AHA or BHA molecules, they cannot penetrate as deeply into the skin, which means they exfoliate primarily at the very surface. This also means they cause significantly less irritation, making them the only chemical exfoliant reliably suitable for sensitive, reactive, eczema-prone, or rosacea-affected Pakistani skin.

What PHA does: Gently resurfaces the skin surface, improves texture and tone with consistent use, delivers mild brightening, and has the additional benefit of acting as a humectant that attracts water to the skin while exfoliating. It also has antioxidant properties that help protect against UV-related oxidative damage.

Best skin concerns for Pakistani skin: Sensitive and reactive skin that cannot tolerate AHA or BHA, mild texture concerns, general maintenance exfoliation for those who prioritize barrier health, and skin that is recovering from over-exfoliation, harsh product use, or barrier damage.

PHA at GlowCare

PHA is most commonly found as a supporting ingredient in combination exfoliant formulas rather than as a standalone product. Dr. Melaxin Peel Shot White Rice Ampoule uses a combination of AHA, BHA, and PHA alongside a calming Pentarice complex, making it one of the most balanced exfoliant formulas available at GlowCare for Pakistani skin that wants comprehensive exfoliation without excessive irritation risk.

How often to use PHA: PHA is gentle enough for daily use on most skin types. It can be used morning or evening, though evening use is still generally preferred to allow maximum skin repair overnight.

🚫 What Not to Do with Chemical Exfoliants

Never combine AHA and BHA in the same application. Using both on the same night, unless specifically formulated as a combination product, significantly increases irritation risk. Alternate them on different evenings instead. If you want both benefits, use BHA on oily and congested areas, then AHA on the rest of the face, rather than layering them on top of each other.

Never skip SPF the morning after exfoliation. All chemical exfoliants increase the skin's vulnerability to UV damage by removing the surface dead cell layer. On the morning after any exfoliant use, SPF50+ sunscreen is not optional. For Pakistani skin dealing with PIH, unprotected UV exposure after exfoliation can actively worsen the dark spots you are trying to fade. Explore our sunscreen collection.

Do not over-exfoliate. The most common Pakistani skincare mistake with chemical exfoliants. Signs of over-exfoliation include persistent redness, tight or stinging skin, increased sensitivity to other products, small patches of irritation, and skin that looks shiny and raw rather than healthy and luminous. If you experience these signs, stop all exfoliation for 1 to 2 weeks and focus on barrier repair with a Ceramide-rich moisturizer.

⚠️ Warning: Do not use harsh physical scrubs with chemical exfoliants

Combining a physical scrub with AHA or BHA on the same night, or on consecutive nights, is one of the fastest ways to damage the skin barrier. Physical scrubs on exfoliant-treated skin cause micro-tears and inflammatory responses that worsen PIH on Pakistani skin. Choose one or the other, not both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which exfoliant is best for oily and acne-prone skin in Pakistan?
BHA (Salicylic Acid) is the most effective exfoliant for oily and acne-prone Pakistani skin because it is oil-soluble and can penetrate into the pore itself to clear congestion. The Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid and Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant are the two most consistently recommended options at GlowCare.

Which exfoliant is best for dark spots and PIH on Pakistani skin?
AHA, particularly Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid, is most effective for fading surface pigmentation, post-acne marks, and PIH by accelerating cell turnover and revealing newer, more evenly pigmented skin beneath. Always pair AHA use with daily SPF50+ and a Niacinamide or TXA serum for the strongest combined PIH treatment approach.

Can I use AHA and BHA together?
Not on the same night as standalone products. Using both simultaneously significantly increases irritation risk and over-exfoliation. The Dr. Melaxin Peel Shot White Rice Ampoule is specifically formulated as a combined AHA, BHA, and PHA product with a calming base, making it a safe option for those who want all three acids in one step.

How do I know if I am over-exfoliating?
Signs include persistent redness or blotchiness, skin that stings when water touches it, tightness, increased sensitivity to previously tolerated products, and skin that looks shiny and raw. If you experience these, stop all exfoliation for 1 to 2 weeks, use only a gentle cleanser and a Ceramide-rich barrier repair moisturizer, and reintroduce exfoliants at a lower frequency when the skin has recovered.

Do I need to use an exfoliant every day?
No. For most Pakistani skin types, 2 to 3 times per week is the optimal exfoliation frequency. Daily exfoliation is only appropriate for oily skin using gentle BHA or PHA products specifically formulated for daily use. More frequent exfoliation than your skin needs accelerates barrier damage rather than improving results.
