Skincare Ingredients Guide: The Complete Reference

Skincare Ingredients Guide: The Complete Reference

By GlowCare Pakistan  ·  July 2026  ·  10 min read

Walking into Korean skincare for the first time can feel like reading a chemistry textbook. Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, PDRN, Retinal, Azelaic Acid, Ceramides, PHA, Snail Mucin. Every brand leads with its hero active and every product claims to address a different concern. This guide is the reference that makes sense of all of it: every major skincare active explained simply, for Pakistani skin specifically, with clear guidance on what each one does, who it is for, and which products at GlowCare deliver the best results.

This is the pillar reference for the GlowCare ingredient guides. Use the links throughout to go deeper on any ingredient that is relevant to your skin concern.

Exfoliating Acids (AHA, BHA, PHA)

Chemical exfoliants dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells and the skin surface, accelerating cell turnover without the physical irritation of scrubbing. For Pakistani skin, regular chemical exfoliation is one of the most effective tools for brightening, pore clearing, and improving the absorption of every other active in your routine.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) — Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid. Water-soluble. Works on the skin surface. Best for dull skin, surface PIH, texture refinement, and aging. Use 2 to 3 times per week in the evening. Always follow with SPF the next morning.

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) — Salicylic Acid. Oil-soluble. Penetrates into the pore itself. Best for oily skin, acne, blackheads, and congestion. Can be used daily on oily Pakistani skin in gentle formulations. Always follow with SPF.

PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid) — Gluconolactone, Lactobionic Acid. Largest molecule size, gentlest penetration. Best for sensitive skin that cannot tolerate AHA or BHA. Can be used daily. Suitable for reactive and barrier-damaged Pakistani skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

The most versatile brightening and balancing active in Korean skincare and one of the most universally suitable ingredients for Pakistani skin. Niacinamide inhibits melanin transfer, controls sebum, strengthens the skin barrier, reduces redness, and provides antioxidant protection. Suitable for all skin types at 2% to 20% concentration. Most effective for Pakistani skin at 5% to 10% for daily use, and 10% to 15% for active PIH treatment.

Best for: Dark spots, post-acne marks, oily skin, enlarged pores, sensitive skin, barrier repair.

Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid and Derivatives)

A potent antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor that neutralizes free radical damage from UV exposure while simultaneously fading dark spots and brightening overall skin tone. Most effective in the morning when it works synergistically with SPF to reduce UV-triggered melanin production. L-Ascorbic Acid is the most potent form but also the least stable and most likely to cause irritation at high concentrations. More stable derivatives (Ascorbyl Glucoside, Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) are better tolerated on sensitive Pakistani skin.

Best for: Dark spot correction, brightening, antioxidant protection, morning routine.

Tranexamic Acid (TXA)

Originally a pharmaceutical used to reduce bleeding, TXA was discovered to significantly inhibit melanin synthesis by blocking the keratinocyte-melanocyte communication pathway. It is one of the most effective brightening ingredients for PIH and melasma on South Asian skin, working through a different mechanism than Niacinamide which means the two are highly complementary when combined. Available at 2% to 5% in serums and toner pads.

Best for: Deep PIH, melasma, post-acne marks, hyperpigmentation on Pakistani skin.

Centella Asiatica (Cica)

A calming botanical with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and barrier-repairing properties derived from a plant used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries. In Korean skincare, Centella Asiatica (also called Cica) is the most trusted ingredient for reactive, acne-prone, and post-procedure skin. Its active compounds, Asiaticoside and Madecassoside, stimulate collagen synthesis and support the repair of a compromised barrier. Skin 1004 Madagascar Centella is sourced from Madagascar specifically for its higher active compound concentration.

Best for: Sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, redness, barrier repair, reactive skin.

Retinol and Retinoids (Vitamin A)

The most extensively researched anti-aging ingredient in dermatology. Retinoids accelerate cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, reduce fine lines and skin laxity, and improve overall skin texture. The Vitamin A family includes several forms at different potency levels: Retinol (widely available), Retinal or Retinaldehyde (more potent, faster-acting), and Retinoic Acid (prescription only). For Pakistani skin beginners, start with Retinol at 0.1% to 0.3% and build gradually. Pair with Niacinamide to minimize irritation. Always use SPF50+ the morning after Retinol application.

Best for: Fine lines, skin firmness, textural aging, long-term skin quality.

Hyaluronic Acid

A naturally occurring polysaccharide that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it the most effective humectant in skincare. Hyaluronic Acid draws moisture from the environment into the skin and holds it there, delivering immediate plumping and long-term hydration. It is molecular-size dependent: low molecular weight HA penetrates deeper but can cause irritation on sensitive skin, while high molecular weight HA stays on the surface and forms a hydrating film. Best applied to slightly damp skin to maximize water binding. Compatible with all other skincare actives.

Best for: Dehydration, all skin types, layering under serums, winter skincare in Islamabad and Lahore. Explore our dry skin and hydration collection.

PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide)

A regenerative active derived from salmon DNA that was originally used in clinical wound healing before being adopted into advanced skincare. PDRN stimulates the skin's own repair mechanisms by activating A2A receptors, promoting new collagen synthesis, improving microcirculation, and accelerating the renewal of damaged skin cells. It is one of the most advanced anti-aging and skin repair ingredients available outside a clinical setting. In Korean skincare, PDRN serums, ampoules, and eye patches have become one of the fastest-growing active categories.

Best for: Anti-aging, skin repair, improving skin firmness and elasticity, post-acne healing.

Azelaic Acid

A dicarboxylic acid with anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, and brightening properties. Azelaic Acid kills C. acnes bacteria, reduces sebaceous gland activity, inhibits melanin production in overactive melanocytes, and has anti-rosacea effects. It is one of the most multifunctional actives for Pakistani skin because it addresses active acne and the PIH it leaves behind simultaneously. Also one of the safest actives for use during pregnancy. Available at 10% to 20% in serums and moisturizers.

Best for: Acne-prone skin with PIH, rosacea, sensitive skin, pregnancy-safe brightening.

Kojic Acid

A naturally derived tyrosinase inhibitor from fungi and fermentation. Kojic Acid directly blocks the enzyme that produces melanin, making it one of the most effective natural brightening actives for dark spots and hyperpigmentation on Pakistani and South Asian skin. Works synergistically with Turmeric and Niacinamide in combined formulas. Available across the Medicube Kojic Acid Turmeric range at GlowCare.

Best for: Dark spots, sun damage, stubborn hyperpigmentation on Pakistani skin. Explore our Kojic Acid skincare collection.

Ceramides

Lipid molecules that make up approximately 50% of the skin's natural moisture barrier (the stratum corneum). Ceramides form the mortar between skin cells that prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and keeps environmental irritants, bacteria, and pollutants from penetrating the skin. Pakistani skin damaged by harsh products, over-exfoliation, or environmental stress benefits significantly from topical Ceramide supplementation in moisturizers and barrier repair creams. CeraVe, Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream, and Cosrx products are among the most ceramide-focused formulas available at GlowCare.

Best for: Dry skin, barrier-damaged skin, sensitive skin, winter skincare, post-exfoliation recovery. Explore our dry skin and hydration collection.

Snail Secretion Filtrate (Snail Mucin)

A regenerative ingredient originally observed to accelerate wound healing and repair in snails. Snail Mucin contains a complex mixture of hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, proteoglycans, copper peptides, and antimicrobial compounds that collectively accelerate skin repair, fade post-acne marks, provide deep hydration, and support barrier function. At 96% concentration in the Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, it is one of the most effective barrier repair and post-acne recovery essences available at GlowCare.

Best for: Post-acne healing, barrier repair, hydration, all skin types.

The Golden Rules of Using Active Ingredients

Introduce one new active at a time. Wait 2 to 4 weeks before adding another. If a reaction occurs, you will know exactly which product caused it.

Apply from thinnest to thickest texture. Toner before essence, essence before serum, serum before moisturizer, moisturizer before SPF. This ensures each product absorbs into the skin rather than sitting on top of a heavier formula.

SPF50+ sunscreen is mandatory when using any brightening or exfoliating active. UV exposure counteracts every brightening treatment and worsens PIH. Without daily SPF, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and AHA are working against an uphill battle every morning.

Not every active is compatible in the same routine. Retinol and AHA should not be used on the same evening. Vitamin C and BHA should not be combined in the same application. Read our full compatibility guide: How to Layer Skincare Ingredients: What Works Together and What to Avoid.

Consistency beats intensity. A 5% Niacinamide serum used consistently every day for 8 weeks outperforms a 20% Niacinamide serum used inconsistently. Start at lower concentrations, use daily, and be patient.
