Glycolic Acid is the most studied alpha hydroxy acid in dermatology and one of the most effective ingredients available for improving skin texture, fading surface hyperpigmentation, and accelerating the cell turnover that dull, uneven skin needs. It is also the AHA most likely to cause irritation when introduced incorrectly, which has given it a reputation for being harsh that its performance does not deserve when used at the right concentration and frequency. This guide covers how Glycolic Acid works, how to introduce it without irritation, and how it fits into a broader Korean skincare routine.
How Glycolic Acid Works
Glycolic Acid is the smallest AHA molecule, which gives it the deepest penetration of any alpha hydroxy acid. It works by breaking the bonds that hold dead skin cells together at the surface of the stratum corneum, accelerating their shedding and revealing the fresher, less-pigmented cells beneath. This accelerated turnover produces three visible benefits: smoother texture (fewer accumulated dead cells on the surface), brighter tone (fewer pigmented old cells visible), and reduced appearance of fine lines (the new cells beneath are plumper and better hydrated).
At higher concentrations (10% and above), Glycolic Acid also stimulates collagen synthesis in the dermis and improves the skin's water-holding capacity by increasing hyaluronic acid production within the epidermis. These deeper effects are what separate consistent Glycolic Acid use from simple surface exfoliation.
What Glycolic Acid Is Best For
Dull, uneven skin texture. The primary indication. Accumulated dead cells on the surface of skin that is not naturally shedding at an adequate rate produce a grey, dull cast and a rough texture that no amount of hydration improves. Glycolic Acid clears this surface accumulation within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use.
Surface dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. By accelerating the shedding of the most pigmented surface cells, Glycolic Acid reveals less-pigmented cells more quickly. It does not inhibit melanin production (that is Niacinamide and TXA's role) but it accelerates the physical removal of the cells containing excess melanin. Combined with Niacinamide or TXA, it is more effective than either alone.
Fine lines and surface texture. Regular AHA exfoliation produces measurable improvement in fine line depth and skin surface smoothness over 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Less effective than Retinol for deeper wrinkles but more immediately visible for surface texture.
Preparing skin for active ingredient absorption. A smooth, dead-cell-free surface absorbs serums and moisturisers more efficiently. Using a Glycolic Acid exfoliant 1 to 2 nights per week improves the efficacy of every active applied after it on the following days.
Glycolic Acid Cautions for South Asian Skin
Photosensitivity risk. Glycolic Acid significantly increases UV sensitivity. Using it without consistent SPF50+ PA++++ the following morning directly counteracts its brightening benefit: new UV-triggered melanin forms on freshly exfoliated skin faster than on intact skin. SPF50+ PA++++ every morning after any AHA use is not optional.
PIH risk on darker skin tones. Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin (covering most South Asian complexions) has a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from over-exfoliation or too-high concentrations of Glycolic Acid. Start at 5% or below. Build slowly. If any redness, stinging, or increased dark spot appearance occurs, discontinue and allow the barrier to recover before reintroducing at lower concentration or frequency.
Do not layer with other exfoliants the same evening. Glycolic Acid on the same night as BHA or Retinol doubles irritation risk without proportionally increasing efficacy. Alternate: Glycolic Acid 1 to 2 nights per week, BHA on different nights, Retinol on separate nights from both.
How to Introduce Glycolic Acid Without Irritation
Start at 5% or below, once per week. Maintain once-per-week use for at least 4 weeks before considering increased frequency. Most South Asian skin types achieve excellent results at once to twice per week without ever needing higher frequency.
Apply on cleansed, dry skin. Applying Glycolic Acid to damp skin increases penetration and irritation risk simultaneously. Always allow the skin to dry fully after cleansing before application.
Neutralise or wait 15 to 20 minutes before the next step. Allow the Glycolic Acid formula to work on the skin for 15 to 20 minutes before applying anything over it. The pH of subsequent products, particularly alkaline ones, can prematurely neutralise the acid if applied too soon.
Always follow with a Ceramide or Niacinamide moisturiser the same evening. AHA use removes dead cells and transiently increases TEWL. A barrier-supportive moisturiser applied after the wait period replenishes the moisture the exfoliation has temporarily increased evaporation of.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Glycolic Acid every day?
