Hyaluronic Acid is one of the most popular ingredients in skincare globally and also one of the most misused. Most people know it as a hydrating ingredient. What most people do not know is that applying it incorrectly, to completely dry skin in low-humidity conditions, can make skin feel more dehydrated than before. This guide covers how HA works, why molecular weight matters, how to apply it correctly, and the best products available at GlowCare.
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a polysaccharide that occurs naturally in the body, with the highest concentrations in skin, eyes, and joints. In skin tissue it maintains hydration, plumpness, and the cushioned, resilient feel of healthy skin. A single HA molecule can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it the most effective humectant in skincare.
Skin HA content decreases with age, UV exposure, and environmental stress. This is a primary reason skin loses plumpness and develops the fine dehydration lines that appear before true aging wrinkles. In skincare formulations, HA is derived through bacterial fermentation, making it suitable for vegan products and free from animal origin concerns.
Molecular Weight: Why It Changes the Result
Not all Hyaluronic Acid is the same. HA molecules come in different sizes described as molecular weight in Daltons (Da), and size determines how deep the molecule penetrates and what it does when it gets there.
High Molecular Weight HA (above 1000 kDa)
Too large to penetrate the skin surface. Sits on top and forms a hydrating film that reduces water evaporation from within the skin. Delivers immediate surface plumping and smoothing. The hydration is real but surface-level: it holds water in rather than adding water deeper.
Effect: Immediate plumping, reduced transepidermal water loss, smoothing before moisturizer.
Low Molecular Weight HA (below 50 kDa)
Smaller fragments that penetrate into the epidermis and upper dermis, delivering hydration to deeper layers. More effective for long-term plumpness and improved skin elasticity. Very low molecular weight HA at very high concentrations can cause mild inflammation in sensitive skin, which is why the best formulations blend molecular weights.
Effect: Deeper hydration, long-term plumping, improved skin resilience over weeks.
Multi-Molecular Weight HA (the best approach)
The most effective formulations combine high, medium, and low molecular weight HA. High MW forms the surface film. Medium MW hydrates the epidermis. Low MW reaches the upper dermis. Look for formulas listing Sodium Hyaluronate (stable form), Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid (low MW), and Sodium Acetyl Hyaluronate (penetrating, low irritation). The Skin 1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum and Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Moisturizing Cream are good examples of multi-weight HA use at GlowCare.
The most common HA mistake
Applying HA to completely dry skin in low-humidity conditions (Islamabad winters, air-conditioned offices, Lahore in January) can draw moisture upward from the skin's deeper layers and allow it to evaporate from the surface, leaving skin feeling tighter than before. Always apply HA to slightly damp skin immediately after toner and follow with a moisturizer within 60 seconds to lock the water in.
How to Use Hyaluronic Acid in Your Routine
Step 1: Cleanse. Remove all impurities first. HA applied to skin with sunscreen or pollution residue on top absorbs less effectively.
Step 2: Tone. Apply your toner and leave the skin slightly damp, not soaking wet, not completely dry. This is the optimal surface state for HA application.
Step 3: Apply HA serum to damp skin. Press 2 to 3 drops into the skin immediately while it is still slightly moist from the toner. Do not rub. The damp surface gives the HA water to bind to as it absorbs.
Step 4: Seal with moisturizer within 60 seconds. This is the most important step. Apply your moisturizer before the HA-dampened surface fully dries. The moisturizer creates an occlusive barrier that traps the water the HA has drawn to the skin surface, preventing it from evaporating. Skipping this step or waiting too long is what causes the counterproductive drying effect.
Morning: Follow with SPF50+. HA applied in the morning provides a hydrated, smooth base for sunscreen and creates the plumped skin surface that makes SPF sit more evenly.
The 7 Skin Method with HA toner
For severely dehydrated skin, particularly useful during Islamabad and Lahore winters, apply a lightweight HA-containing toner in 3 to 7 thin layers using palms, pressing each layer in gently before the next. This technique floods the skin with layered hydration before any heavier product is applied and produces measurably more hydrated skin than a single toner application. Works best with lightweight watery toners like Anua Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner or TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner.
HA vs Glycerin: Understanding Both Humectants
Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin are the two primary humectants in Korean skincare, and they appear together in many formulas because they complement each other well.
Glycerin has a smaller molecule and is a more cost-effective humectant with a strong track record of efficacy. It draws water effectively and is suitable for most skin types. HA provides superior surface plumping due to its exceptional water-holding capacity and the film-forming properties of high molecular weight forms. Together they provide both immediate surface hydration (HA film) and deeper, sustained humectant action (Glycerin and low MW HA working through the epidermis). Most well-formulated Korean toners and moisturizers use both, which is more effective than either alone.

What Pairs Well with Hyaluronic Acid
HA is one of the most universally compatible skincare ingredients. It pairs well with virtually every active in a routine because it is a hydrating support ingredient rather than a treatment active. It does not interact with or interfere with Retinol, AHA, BHA, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, TXA, or Ceramides.
The most beneficial pairings from a results perspective:
HA and Ceramides — HA draws water to the skin, Ceramides lock it in at the barrier level. Together they address both the water content and the water-retention capacity of the skin. The most complete approach to genuine skin hydration, particularly effective for dry and barrier-compromised skin during cold, dry seasons.
HA and Retinol — HA applied before or alongside Retinol significantly reduces the dryness, tightness, and flaking that Retinol can cause during the adjustment period. Apply HA serum or a Glycerin-rich toner before your Retinol, and follow with a Ceramide-rich moisturizer to seal everything in.
HA and Niacinamide — A practical everyday combination for any skin type. HA provides hydration, Niacinamide provides barrier support and brightening. Both are present in many single formulas. Explore our niacinamide skincare collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my skin more dry after using hyaluronic acid?
Almost certainly because it was applied to completely dry skin or not sealed with a moisturizer afterward. HA draws water toward itself. In low-humidity conditions or on dry skin without an occlusive layer on top, it draws moisture from the deeper layers and allows it to evaporate at the surface. Apply to damp skin and always follow with moisturizer within 60 seconds.
Can I use hyaluronic acid every day?
Yes. HA is one of the safest and most universally tolerable skincare ingredients available. It is suitable for twice-daily use on all skin types including sensitive, acne-prone, oily, and reactive skin. Unlike exfoliants or Retinol, it does not require cycling or days off.
Does hyaluronic acid help with wrinkles?
Topical HA reduces the appearance of fine surface lines and dehydration lines by plumping the skin from within and reducing water evaporation. It does not have the collagen-stimulating effect of Retinol or Peptides on deeper structural wrinkles. For the best combined approach to anti-aging hydration and collagen support, pair HA with Retinol or PDRN in an evening routine.
What is the difference between hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate?
Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt form of Hyaluronic Acid and is the form most commonly used in skincare formulations. It is slightly smaller, more stable, and better absorbed than the acid form, making it more effective and longer-lasting in products. When you see Sodium Hyaluronate on an ingredients list, it is functionally equivalent to Hyaluronic Acid for skincare purposes.
