Pore Care: How to Minimise Pores and Keep Them Clear

Pore Care: How to Minimise Pores and Keep Them Clear

By GlowCare Pakistan  ·  Sep 2026  ·  7 min read

Pores are one of the most frequently misunderstood skin concerns in skincare. The claim that any product can "shrink" or "close" pores is not biologically accurate. Pore diameter is determined by genetics and cannot be permanently changed by topical products. What can change is how large pores appear, which is determined by how much sebum and dead cell debris is accumulated inside them. An empty, clear pore reflects light evenly and appears small. A pore stretched by accumulated sebum or congestion appears significantly larger. This guide covers what actually works for pore appearance and how to build an effective pore care routine.

Why Pores Look Large

Sebum accumulation. The most common cause of visible enlarged pores. When sebum mixes with dead skin cells inside the pore and is not regularly cleared, the pore walls stretch to accommodate the volume. The stretched pore then appears larger even after the congestion is removed, because repeated stretching reduces the pore's elasticity over time.

Sun damage. UV exposure degrades the collagen structure surrounding pores. Collagen acts as a scaffold that keeps pore walls taut. As collagen depletes from UV damage, pore walls lose their structural support and the pores sag open and appear larger. This is one of the less-discussed reasons why consistent SPF50+ PA++++ use genuinely improves pore appearance over years of consistent use.

Age-related collagen loss. The same mechanism as UV damage. Natural collagen decline from the mid-twenties onward progressively reduces the structural support around pore walls. Anti-aging actives like Retinol and PDRN address this by stimulating new collagen synthesis.

Skin dehydration. Dehydrated skin produces more sebum as compensation, increasing pore congestion. It also makes the skin surface appear less smooth, making pores appear more prominent by contrast. Adequate skin hydration is a pore care step that is frequently overlooked.

What Actually Works for Pore Appearance

BHA (Salicylic Acid) — The Most Targeted Pore Active

BHA is oil-soluble and penetrates directly into the pore, dissolving the sebum and dead cell mix that stretches pore walls. Consistent 2 to 3 nights per week BHA use is the most effective topical intervention for reducing pore congestion and its associated enlarged appearance. Results are progressive over 6 to 8 weeks. The Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid and the Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 are the most targeted pore care products at GlowCare. Explore our pore care collection and exfoliators collection.

Niacinamide — Sebum Control and Pore Structure

Niacinamide reduces sebum production at the sebaceous gland level, which reduces the accumulation rate inside pores and progressively reduces the stretching that makes pores appear larger. At 10%, it also supports collagen synthesis in the surrounding skin, improving the structural tautness around pore walls. The Anua Niacinamide 10% TXA 4% Dark Spot Correcting Serum delivers both sebum control and brightening alongside its Niacinamide content. Discover our niacinamide collection.

Retinol — Long-Term Collagen Support

Retinol accelerates cell turnover (reducing the dead cell accumulation that contributes to pore congestion) and stimulates collagen synthesis (improving the structural support around pore walls). Over 3 to 6 months of consistent use, Retinol produces measurable improvement in pore appearance through both mechanisms. Explore our retinol collection.

SPF50+ PA++++ — UV Collagen Protection

Preventing further UV-driven collagen degradation around pore walls is one of the most impactful long-term pore care steps available. Consistent daily SPF50+ PA++++ use halts the ongoing collagen loss that progressively worsens pore appearance with age. This is the reason pore appearance is meaningfully better in consistently sun-protected skin of the same age and type. Shop sunscreen collection.

Double Cleansing — Prevention at the Source

An oil cleanser that removes SPF and sebum from the pore opening before a water-based cleanser removes residual impurities is the most effective daily maintenance step for preventing pore congestion from accumulating. Skin that is thoroughly cleansed every evening requires less corrective BHA use because less congestion builds up to clear. Explore our cleanser collection.

What Does Not Work for Pores

Pore strips. Remove the visible tip of blackheads without clearing the pore interior. The sebum and dead cells lining the pore walls remain, and the blackhead reforms within days. Pore strips also mechanically stress the skin around the nose, potentially damaging capillaries with repeated use. BHA delivers the same visible result over slightly longer timeframe with none of the physical damage.

Products that claim to "close" or "tighten" pores instantly. Astringents (alcohol-based toners, witch hazel) temporarily tighten the skin surface, creating the appearance of reduced pore size. This effect lasts 20 to 30 minutes and is followed by rebound sebum production as the skin compensates for dryness. The net effect over time is worse pore congestion, not better.

Clay masks used without regular BHA. Clay masks absorb surface sebum and pull out pore congestion mildly. They are a useful weekly addition but not a substitute for consistent BHA use, which addresses the interior of the pore rather than just the surface.

The realistic pore care timeline

Visible reduction in blackhead appearance: 2 to 4 weeks of consistent BHA use. Meaningful reduction in overall pore congestion and appearance: 6 to 8 weeks. Long-term improvement in pore wall structure from Niacinamide and Retinol: 3 to 6 months of daily use. Pore care is a maintenance routine rather than a one-time correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can pores actually be made smaller?
Pore diameter is genetically fixed and cannot be permanently reduced by topical products. What changes is the appearance: a clear, unstretched pore appears significantly smaller than the same pore filled with sebum and dead cells. Consistent BHA use, Niacinamide for sebum control, and Retinol for collagen support around pore walls produce the most significant and lasting reduction in the visible appearance of pores available through topical skincare.

Why do my pores look larger in summer?
Heat increases sebum production, which increases pore congestion and stretching. High humidity prevents sebum from evaporating from the skin surface, compounding the buildup. Adding BHA to the evening routine during the warmer months and switching to a matte-finish SPF that does not contribute additional oiliness are the most effective seasonal adjustments. Is the Medicube Zero Pore Pad better than the Cosrx BHA Liquid for pores?
They address the same concern through slightly different formulations. The Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid uses 4% Betaine Salicylate at a higher concentration for oily skin with significant congestion. The Medicube Zero Pore Pad combines Salicylic Acid with Niacinamide in a convenient pad format that simultaneously addresses sebum control alongside pore clearing. Both are effective; the choice is between a higher-concentration dedicated BHA and a convenient dual-active pad format. Read: Medicube vs Anua: Which Brand Is Right for You.
